Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The aim of this module is to develop students' skills and knowledge to enable them to complete a post-graduate level research project. This module provides learners with the latest concepts, knowledge, and skills to undertake conceptual and empirical research in their field, taking into account the ethical and social implications involved in the research. In doing so it covers the research approaches, strategies and methods necessary to conduct research within their fields. This content will also incorporate elements of prospective topics, research tools, and effective report writing techniques to assist in the completion of a research dissertation.

Syllabus:

The syllabus covers fundamental issues relating to the research process. It introduces students to Library databases/sources, how to conduct a critical review of the literature, how to turn a research idea into a research question and how to operationalise theoretical perspectives into a researchable project. The course also covers academic writing and how to write a supervisor proposal. In addition, students will learn how to structure and sequence a thesis report, format a thesis report, and source and reference scholarly material. Students will further learn ways in which they can source and collect data, and identify analysis tools and research methodologies. Students will continue to learn how to analyse data, and discuss their findings and implications stemming from the research.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: • Demonstrate an understanding of the research process and expectations of the thesis writing process • Identify a research gap and frame a research question • Develop research strategies that can be used to responsibly conduct research activity • Critically evaluate literature in terms of its importance and contribution. • Appropriately structure and effectively write a research proposal

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The primary teachings over the module will be delivered on-campus over a 1-week intensive period. Students will be expected and responsible to participate in class interactions and engage with fellow learners and lecturer to create a collaborative environment. Following this period, students will be required to demonstrate their agility and articulation of thought by independently developing their research strategy. Student learning during this period will be supported by instructor-led sessions held weekly online. Students will have access to all materials and resources through the Learner Management System Brightspace. Feedback on their learning will be provided on an ongoing basis and students should be proactive and be able to track their own personal development throughout the programme.
