Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

Organizations are faced with numerous competing demands impacting on their business performance. This module aims to equip students with the necessary advanced financial and management accounting skills to assist an organization with strategic planning and implementation in a contemporary business environment. Students will learn valuable management techniques and tools while augmenting their awareness of their professional ethical responsibilities.

Syllabus:

This module will build on the students' appreciation of the role of the professional accountant in setting financial objectives, whilst gaining a deeper understanding of the complex regulatory and legal framework in which the accountant operates. Students will explore assessing strategic performance in the contemporary business environment with considerations to corporate governance, sustainability and corporate social responsibility. The students will develop skills in assessing all financial aspects of organisations, focusing on methods of raising capital externally. The module will equip students with the necessary skills to advise on capital distributions and decisions relating to Mergers & Acquisitions. Students will explore the issues involved in establishing transfer prices and the conflicts that can arise with price setting amongst divisionalised companies. Techniques for designing and analysing performance linked to an oganisations' strategies will be explored, enabling students to advise on the most appropriate strategies to enable the achievement of particular business goals.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1. Critically evaluate and decide on the most appropriate performance measures to align with the organisations' strategic goals, in the face of competing complex demands. 2. Demonstrate an ability to frame and engage with intricate financial problems, identifying resolutions for improving business performance. 3. Critically evaluate financing options to include sourcing of external capital from various sources and the organisations dividend policy. 4. Appraise the current and future business performance and industry positioning through the use of detailed variance and ratio analysis, highlighting trends to establish the organisations industry positioning. 5. Demonstrate an ability to effectively communicate solutions at a high level for complex business problems.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an appreciation of the influence of ethical and environmental factors and other non-financial performance indicators in business decision making. 2. Demonstrate an appreciation of the regulatory, governance and legal framework applicable in financial management, and consider the complexities and interdependencies of different stakeholder perspectives.

The Module will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials and guest speakers through which the student will acquire the technical skills and knowledge required to add to the strategic performance of an organisation. This module will promote graduate attributes of being curious, agile, courageous, responsible and articulate, by engaging students with complex real-world financial problems, and encouraging students to work collaboratively to find and effectively communicate solutions to the problems.
