Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

In the world we live in, creativity and innovation are crucial drivers of change. Equally 'story telling' capacity is increasingly important to enhance communication in a world of information overload, disinformation, noise and clutter. The purpose of this module is introduce students to concepts of creativity and innovation and to the role and relevance of 'story telling. It will familiarise students with real world examples of creativity and innovation and will encourage them to recognise their own creative and innovation potential. The module will also cultivate student's own story telling style and skills.

Syllabus:

As well as enabling an understanding of the concepts and science behind creativity, innovation and storytelling, this module will help to cultivate a creative and innovative mindset in students and help them to more effectively communicate their ideas through enhanced story telling. Over the duration of the module students will be introduce to the creative and innovative mindset and will be encouraged to consider both the enablers and disablers of creativity and innovation. They will also be introduced to techniques and practices designed to stimulate their own creativity and innovative capacity and to techniques of storytelling as a way to enhance their communicative capacity, and as core component in innovation. Finally, students will be introduced to the role and relevance of creativity, innovation and storytelling in problem solving.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - Demonstrate an understanding of concepts of innovation and creativity and their significance in various contexts - Describe the stages of the innovation process, including idea generation, selection, development, and implementation. - Identify and reframe complex problems and challenges to make them more amenable to creative solutions - Summarise and apply the structures and techniques of effective storytelling

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - Embrace a mindset that encourages speculation, creative thinking and innovation - Display resilience in the face of obstacles to creativity and innovation - Justify the potential of storytelling to effectively communicate innovative ideas and solutions to diverse stakeholders - Show an awareness of the ethical responsibility of the storyteller

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will be taught using a combination of lectures and tutorials, during which students will be introduced to conceptual material, practical exercises, group projects, case studies, and guest speakers who have successfully applied these concepts in various fields. Students will also be encouraged and supported to connect with and share their own creativity and story telling capacities. This module directly supports the development of the 'articulate', the 'courageous', the 'curious' and and the 'agile' UL graduate attribute.
