Hours Per Week:
Grading Type:

Prerequisite Modules:
Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module is designed to furnish participants with an understanding of approaches to development in practice and the demands and challenges facing practitioners. It will enable students to identify and analyse the political, economic, environmental, social and technological context in which development practice is located. The module will also introduce students to processes of policy-making, implementation and programme management in context.
Syllabus:
The module will introduce students to the different contexts within which 'development' takes place. The module will first consider what the idea of 'development' means, looking at it in terms of economic, social, cultural, technological and environmental progress. Having established this broader context, the module will explore the different levels where planning for development occurs, looking at the role of national and supra national development planning (including the global Sustainable Development Goals framework), sectoral planning, programme level planning and project planning. In doing so, it will pay particular attention to the challenge of incorporating climate change priorities into planning considerations at all levels and at the role of citizen participation / civic engagement. Finally, the module will introduce students to some of the frequently used methodologies / frameworks for planning at these different levels.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Describe key theories and models of development and understand the interaction between the different levels of development planning
- Compare and contrast different programme management approaches, such as results-based management and logical framework analysis
- Identify the major stakeholders in development contexts, including governments, the private sector, NGOs, and local communities, and understand their sometimes-competing roles and interests
- Evaluate the importance of sustainability and environmental considerations in development programmes

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Show a commitment to ethical and sustainable development practices that prioritize social and environmental responsibility
- Display a proactive and adaptable attitude toward problem-solving in complex and dynamic development environments
- Acknowledge the importance of different stakeholders and their priorities in development planning processes
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
This module will be taught in a highly interactive fashion using a combination of lectures and tutorials. It will have a strong focus on active development planning processes and will enable students to engage in real time analysis of these processes. The module will also engage with and involve 'development planners' so as to incorporate their real world experience into student learning. This module will target two particular graduate attributes i.e. Curious and Responsible, aiming to encourage students curiosity about 'development' and responsibility in planning how development takes place.
