Prerequisite Modules:
Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
The purpose of this module is to provide an opportunity for students to reflect on and integrate the learning from the range of modules taken on their programme of studies. Generally, students take modules in isolation of each other. They focus on their specific learning outcomes and do not necessarily draw the connections between individual modules. This module will engage students in a reflective process to consider how the programme learning outcomes have been achieved and how the individual modules have contributed to this. As such, the module will support students to identify and articulate their learning from the entire programme, not just individual modules.
Syllabus:
This three credit module will focus on enhancing students capacity for integrated, reflexive learning about their programme of study. It will firstly introduce students to the concept of reflexive learning as a conscious process of pausing, thinking, and analysing what they have learned, why they have learned it and how they have done so. This is an important transferable skill that will benefit the students when they later enter the workforce. The module will then enable students to apply this process of reflexive practice to their programme of study, in particular, identifying the relationships between the learning from their different modules, as well as their overall learning from their programme of study. Students will be required to present the outcome of their reflexive process so as to build their capacity to articulate and demonstrate learning.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of reflexive practice and its relevance to the learning and workplace environments.
- Recognise the importance and relevance of reflexive learning practice.
- Critically reflect on the learning, skills and competencies that they have gained from their programme of study to date
- Demonstrate their capacity for reflexive practice by articulating and presenting their reflexive practice experience and its impacts.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the importance of reflexive practice in maximising the outcomes from their investment in a programme of study
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
N/A
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
This module will be taught using a combination of lectures and tutorials. Lectures will supply relevant inputs about the role, relevance and component parts of reflexive learning, whereas tutorials will facilitate in class discussion, presentations and peer commentary. Students will be required to complete a reflexive journal to capture their learning and use this as the basis for assessment and preparation of their in-class presentation. This module provides students with a number of important transferable skills that align with the UL graduate attributes. In particular, students will be facilitated to be agile, open minded and to reflect on their capacity to be adaptive and flexible. This module will also stimulate student curiosity and will build their critical capacities.
