Module Code - Title:
AR4014
-
GRAVITY AND REACTION 4
Year Last Offered:
2025/6
Hours Per Week:
Grading Type:
N
Prerequisite Modules:
AR4013
Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
Give students an understanding of structural models using experiment, project work and formal learning. Give students a strong conceptual and formal grasp of materials used in structural design, which are applicable to actual conditions.
Syllabus:
Continued Introduction to structural concepts. Topics covered will be portal frames, crane structure; RC beam design; timber truss design in qualitative process; shells, membranes. Introduction to materials used in structural design; concrete, reinforced concrete; timber; laminated timber; glulaminated timber; steel; models to describe failure modes in structures.
Students will research:
* Materials in the studio and in a site context.
* Materials used in structural design and their relevant components
* Design and build in model form a bridge with calculated design loads and span.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
The students should by the end of the semester be able to:
* Understand connection types: roller, pin, fixed
* Understand and make simple designs in timber
* Understand and make designs of Special trusses from timber
* Understand and make simple designs in glulaminated timber.
* Understand steel design in terms of lateral stability, local stresses, and composite structures
* Understand the principles of reinforced concrete design: compression, steel reinforcing: tension, shear, axial load
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
see above
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
see above
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
Continued introduction to structural concepts. Topics covered will be connection types, roller, pinned, fixed; structural design concepts in steel, concrete and timber; introduction to materials used in structural design; concrete, reinforced concrete; timber; laminated timber; glulam; steel; models to describe failure modes in structures.
