Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module will develop a deeper understanding of function of the major body systems in the context of health and the treatment of disease. Additionally, students will learn about the integration of systems and homeostasis to maintain health and prevent disease. This module is tailored specifically to the needs of second year medical students who will be moving onto the KHI curriculum in year 3. The module will focus on introducing medical students to the clinical applications of physiology and introduce the use of case studies and clinically focused lectures/tutorials to ensure that students will be able to apply this knowledge to understand how medical conditions are diagnosed and treated.

Syllabus:

The syllabus has been designed to provide a systematic approach to the human body, with a specific focus on the integration of different physiological systems. The following is indicative of the content to be covered in this syllabus: • Molecular/Cellular and Organ Level of Organisation • Homeostasis as it relates to medical problems • Dysregulation of the different systems and common diseases Specific focus will be placed on the integration of physiological systems and introducing the concept of co-morbidities.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: • Outline the chemical and cellular level of organisation within the human body; • Describe the function of the major body systems and understand how they are regulated to maintain homeostasis; • Discuss common diseases as a result of dysregulation; • Interpret experimental data/observations in physiology.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The curriculum has been designed to foster enquiry and self-directed learning among students, by introducing students to current research and developing reflective skills during the acquisition of knowledge. This module will be taught via lecture, lab and tutorial with a strong emphasis on the use of case studies to enable students to apply the knowledge to clinical situations. Outside this formal contact the student will be encouraged to develop skills in acquiring information as individual learners as well as working in group learning teams. In engaging with the module appropriately, students will further develop across the following domains of the UL Graduate Attributes: Curious (problem solver and knowledgeable), Agile (independent and open minded) and Articulate (collaborative, strong interpersonal skills). The ethos across the curriculum is to ensure research led teaching. Lecture content will be constantly updated to incorporate new findings in the field of physiology.
