Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the social, ethical, legal, and cultural aspects of biomedical science and their impact on society. Students will explore the relationship between biomedical science and societal factors, including healthcare policies, public perceptions, bioethics, and global health challenges.

Syllabus:

The content of this module utilises the existing strength and expertise within the School of Medicine, including that of public health, public and patient involvement, and social determinants of health. Importantly this module will develop the student's skills in scientific literacy and communication, teaching them how to engage effectively with the range of stakeholders in biomedical science including fellow scientists, patients, clinicians, industry collaborators and the wider public. The following is indicative of the content to be covered in this syllabus: • Global health challenges: disease, pandemic, vaccination, aging, global health equity, social determinants of health • Emerging technologies and social implications: genetics, artificial intelligence • Human factors in health interventions, including adverse effects, patient monitoring • Public and patient involvement in biomedical science • The research landscape and careers in biomedical science • Introduction to biomedical science and society: history and importance • Ethics in biomedical research • Ethical issues in clinical practice

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: • Describe the social, ethical legal and cultural aspects of biomedical science in the society; • Outline the importance of the patient involvement and public perception in biomedical science and research; • Develop scientific literacy and recognise the importance of engaging with patients and healthcare practitioners; • Communicate the importance of Biomedical Science and Research in tackling the global health challenges.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: • Acknowledge the ethical and legal aspects relating to disease diagnosis, patient monitoring and biomedical research in Society; • Recognise the importance of engaging with patients in biomedical research.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: N/A

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The curriculum has been designed to foster enquiry and self-directed learning among students. It will encourage reflective learning and enable students to contextualise learning from other modules and consider the ethical and social aspects of their programme of study. Proposed delivery: Lectures, discussions, case studies, and guest lectures from experts in relevant fields. This module addresses the graduate attributes of curious (providing knowledge and critical thinking), agile (developing the independent learner) and articulate (developing interpersonal and collaborative skills).
