Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

To develop the theoretical and practical skills of independent academic research and academic writing, literature review and self-expression in a technical domain. To develop the professional skills required when managing a project. To enable development of a specialist understanding of a chosen topic. This module is M graded and linked to Bioscience Final Year Project (ID 9254 - Bioscience Final Year Project) in Spring Semester of Year 4.

Syllabus:

With guidance from an academic supervisor, the student will select a single project within the Biosciences. The project may involve practical laboratory work or focus on the design and optimization of a process in the Biosciences. In this module, the student will receive training in health and safety, perform risk assessments, understanding of ethics and research integrity, and develop both theoretical and practical skillsets essential for successful completion of a research project. The core of the project will be a student-centred activity, with individual support provided by the project supervisor and, where applicable, by industrial partners or associated research groups.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Become familiar with the conduct of a formal literature search and the critical assessment of the material. Analyse published material from various sources and synthesize this information into a concise report and oral presentation. Identify in a project plan, the aims, objectives and methodologies proposed for use in proposed project. Develop both practical and theoretical skills to formulate a working hypothesis and design appropriate experimentation to test it.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Defend, using structured scientific arguments the conclusions reached in the literature review and justify the objectives and methodologies proposed for use in the project to academic examiners. Display a professional commitment to the management of the project. Develop an effective working relationship with supervisor and technical staff.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This is an independent research project where students learn by applying the knowledge, understanding and skills attained throughout their programme by means of self-directed research so that the principles, techniques and methodologies learned may be applied to a particular problem in the Biosciences. The module is research based and will incorporate recent research findings in the formulation of the hypothesis and the design of the experimentation.
