Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This is the seventh of eight practice placement modules and the first internship placement module. This module is offered at learning level 4, towards development of competence (NMBI 2016). The student will be expected to apply a systematic approach to the provision of person centred nursing care, demonstrating an evidence based approach to practice. The student is capable of supporting the person, their primary carers and professional colleagues within the clinical environment.
Syllabus:
Experience within the chosen discipline of nursing enhances the application of theory to practice, working within the multidisciplinary team.
At competent practitioner level the student utilises a systematic framework; assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care in preparation for the role as autonomous practitioner. Other responsibilities include advising others, showing ability to teach junior colleagues, identifying personal management style. Reflection, critical analysis, evaluation and decision-making skills are demonstrated in clinical placement setting.

Manage personal and professional accountability when providing and documenting safe and compassionate best practice nursing care.
Appraise principles of quality and safety to audit and evaluate nursing practice.

Demonstrate respect, kindness and compassion towards all persons in the practice setting.
Demonstrate and uphold the professional values and standards as laid out in the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics (NMBI 2014) supported by the University of Limerick Code of Conduct.
Appreciate factors that influence how individuals think and respond in particular practice situations.
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
Recognise and interpret signs of normal and changing health care needs and escalate accordingly within the provision of a person centred plan of care.
Utilise communication techniques in empowering a person with sensory, physical, emotional, behavioural or cultural communication difficulties.
Apply the principles of coordinating, delegating and supervising safe, quality, compassionate nursing care.
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
Students assessment and successful completion of this module is underpinned by safety and wellness of the person in the practice setting. This takes cognisance of and supersedes all other considerations with regard to student wellbeing and performance in practice (NMBI 2016).
Describe the relevance and importance of an evidence based approach to nursing care. Incorporate relevant national and international health policy.
