Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This is the fifth of eight modules exploring midwifery practice. The purpose of this module is to provide the student with an opportunity to gain further experience in midwifery practice and to develop skills necessary to provide holistic care.

Syllabus:

This module has practice placement of fifteen weeks. The student actively participates in the care of women and their babies and is able to demonstrate the requisite knowledge, skills and professional behaviours under the indirect supervision of the midwife. The module will also contribute to an appreciation of the variety of settings which can be applied to midwifery practice. The student continues to identify his/her learning needs, through reflection and engagement in the learning environment.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Demonstrates ability to provide sufficient evidence based information to the woman to empower her to make informed decisions about her care and that of her baby. Demonstrate the ability to inform future professional and personal practice through reflection, drawing on evidence.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

Demonstrate and uphold the professional values and standards as laid out in the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics (NMBI 2014) supported by The University of Limerick Code of Conduct. Demonstrates the ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with women, their families and with the multidisciplinary healthcare team in a variety of settings.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

Works within the scope of practice for a third year midwifery student and recognises own level of knowledge, skills and professional behaviours. Demonstrate the ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care using observation, history taking and clinical assessment to plan individualised care for women during pregnancy, labour, birth or the postnatal period. Demonstrates the ability to provide care that is safe, evidence based, supportive, responsive and compassionate taking into account the needs of the woman, her baby and her family.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Students will be provided with an opportunity to engage in practice under the supervision of a registered midwife. Students assessment and successful completion of this module is underpinned by the safety and wellbeing of the mother and her baby. This takes cognisance of and supersedes all other considerations with regard to student well-being and performance in practice (NMBI 2015). As a result of experiencing clinical practice in midwifery, the module aims to develop UL graduate attributes. Following participation in providing care, students will become more knowledgeable and responsible in their approach to women-centred holistic care. Students will become more articulate in relation to evidence based care and collaborative within the multidisciplinary team. An evidence based approach to midwifery care will be integrated into clinical practice.
