Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module is an introduction to the wide range of art types and practices which make up the digital arts. It contextualizes the aesthetics and modes of approach of the digital arts by presenting the historical development of post 19th Century art practices and technologically mediated art forms. It evaluates these forms from a range of theoretical and practical vantage points thereby providing a perspective from which students can critically relate to the digital arts in general as well as to their own practice.

5. Digitally Enabled Sculpture

Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able be able to:
1. Describe the development of computer assisted and enabled art practice within an historical and t echnical framework.
2. Compare and contrast the aesthetic developments within the three main areas of Music/Sound Ar t, Video/Film and Interactive/Virtual Art.
3. Recognise and assess the theoretical concepts associated with these developments.
4. Be aware of a representative portfolio of key examples of digital art.
5. Evaluate new digital art in terms of its technical and practical conditions.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Categorise and critically appraise works of digital art in terms of aesthetic impact and conceptual significance.
2. Through an appreciation of a diverse range of digital arts practice, integrate this into the development of new digital art works and creative technologies.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
The module aims at the development of the student's ability to critique digital artworks. In that regard, the module leader is responsible for providing students with the appropriate tools which enables the critiquing process. Students will engage in open discussion sessions during lectures in which they will need to coherently articulate their opinion of a given artwork or field of research in the Digital Arts domain. An end term exam will also test their argumentative ability in writing.
