Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module will provide the student with knowledge of and practical experience in interaction and participatory design methods that support participatory innovation in the design of human-centred systems. Adaptation of Interaction Design methods will be discussed, and the particular perspective of Participatory Design will be examined in detail.

Syllabus:

This module introduces the student to the theory and practice of participatory design, with particular focus on its methods, tools and techniques. The module will cover the history of participatory design and will introduce three main approaches to PD: using design games, using design probes, using critical artifacts to foster participation of users and stakeholders in the design process.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to: 1. Describe current critical issues in the discipline of participatory design; 2. Specify the appropriate conceptual and methodological approaches to collaboratively designing in specific settings; 3. Recognize when to adapt and appropriate participatory design techniques and tools; 4. Build high-fidelity collaborative design tools and prototypes of design ideas;

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to: 1. Display a strong commitment to participative design approaches. 2. Demonstrate a commitment to an ethical approach to user involvement.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to: 1. Display an ability to develop physical collaborative design tools and prototypes.
