Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

To understand the principles and techniques of Interactive Media. Designing, developing and evaluating interactive media for a variety of application areas.

Syllabus:

This module introduces students to cognitive, perceptual and physical aspects of designing interactive multimedia. They will learn to understand how cognitive and perceptual models and capabilities affect our interaction with digital media. Through an examination of laws of human-computer interaction, they will learn to design systems that work for their users. They will also learn how to work with users to evaluate their designs and ensure that the designer's cognitive model of a system matches that of the users

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1. Design interactive multimedia systems based on a human-centred, iterative approach. 2. Develop user scenarios for a given interactive problem domain. 3. Evaluate usability for interactive media products. 4. Explain the perception and cognition models that facilitate communication between humans and computers. 5. Create an interactive multimedia product using contemporary software tools and programming languages

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an appreciation of the importance of designing for cognitive and perceptual capabilities of users 2. Show a commitment to designing accessible interactive media 3. Recognise the importance of ethical issues in designing and evaluating with users

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

N/a

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module combines lectures about the theory and practice of interactive media design and development with practical lab sessions in which the students create interactive media using modern software and programming languages. The module takes a project-based learning approach to allow students to develop the necessary skills to create interactive media applications for a variety of technologies and domains.
