Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

In this course students investigate of key concepts and methods in the fields of interaction and experience design. The students will deepen their knowledge and understanding of key issues in the Interaction Design field, such as design thinking, interaction experience, and critical sensibility.

Syllabus:

The module will examine and explore a number of key themes related to interaction and experience design in a variety of settings. It will involve a series of student-led seminars. Each week, a different group of students will be responsible for the preparation of the material and activities. A number of themes, issues and domains for further study will be provided at the beginning of the semester, and students may, after consultation, add to this list. This is a selection of topics from the current list: • The evolution of Interaction Design • Embodied and embedded interaction • The future of work • Interaction Design serving the Sustainable Development Goals • Smart cities, smart homes, smart communities • Education for the future • Artificial Intelligence as material for design • Ethical technology uses • Decolonising design • Designing for mixed reality • Interacting with robots

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1. Identify reliable research materials on various interaction design topics. 2. Discuss and interpret their content, present it to their peers and use it in written reports. 2. Select the most suitable design approach for reaching specific goals. 3. Employ appropriate design methods and techniques for tackling different design goals. 4. Prepare and organise design activities for team work, based on the different design methods and techniques studied and on the particular goals chosen. 5. Justify own design choices and solutions and describe the process followed. 6. Critique peer solutions and determine potential improvements.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1. Practise public presentations and responding to questions. 2. Articulate and discuss issues and questions related to the fields of Interaction and Experience design 3. Demonstrate an appreciation of the role of users in design.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module is taught in synergy with Principles of Interaction and Experience Design 2 - Project. Together, the modules will contribute to make the students knowledgeable and articulated, as they offer an opportunity to deepen, present and critique the material taught in Semester 1, with focus on design and research methods. The module is project-based and multidisciplinary. Work in the module is based on group projects to support the development of the students' proactivity, collaboration and responsibility. Creativity is central as this is a design module. It will be the responsibility of the group, in consultation with the instructor, to provide a brief 1-2 page information note on the material analysed, together with reading links for the class in advance of each seminar session. Each seminar will consist of a class presentation prepared by a different group of students, and a series of hands-on design activities in connection with the topic presented. The design activities will take place in the design studio, involving groups of students and will include a presentation and a critique of the work of each group at the end of the activity.
