RESEARCH METHODS FOR HEALTH
Year Last Offered:
2025/6
Hours Per Week:
Grading Type:
N
Prerequisite Modules:
Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module is designed to enhance students' abilities to understand and engage
in all aspects of the research process including question formation, research
design and methodology (qualitative and quantitative), approaches to analysis
(qualitative and quantitative analysis) and finally the representation of research
findings in research articles and presentations. Ethical considerations are
addressed throughout all stages of research. Particular consideration is given to
identifying relevant ethical clearances and potential funding sources to support
research in the health professions.
This module aims to facilitate the awareness of the multi-dimensional aspects of
research and encourage the student to evaluate a variety of evidence based
approaches to developing research ideas and protocols, with the aim of
enhancing research in the healthcare professions.
Syllabus:
Research questions, design and methodology: qualitative and quantitative, statistical analyses, systematic reviews, introduction to research ethics. To develop further students understanding of the research process, including funding sources and procedures for ethical clearances
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Explain the contribution of research in promoting and enhancing clinical effectiveness.
Formulate research questions and appropriate aims.
Justify appropriate research designs.
Demonstrate the ability to systematically search, identify, critically appraise, synthesize, and summarize evidence-based research into their clinical practice.
Consider the qualities and benefits of quantitative and qualitative approaches to health and social care research.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an appreciation for the logistics of time, funding and resources required to be able to produce a realistic timeline for a research project
Demonstrate an appreciation for the impact of personal and cognitive biases on research findings
Defend the importance of a reflexive and reflective stance within research and inquiry
Demonstrate an appreciation for the importance of honesty, reliability, objectivity, impartiality, communication, duty of care, fairness and responsibility in research practice
Examine the ethical issues pertinent in clinical research.
Discuss the complexity of healthcare within professional and ethical behaviours.
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
Traditionally research was primarily discipline-specific; however, many studies
now reflect the inter-professional or multidisciplinary nature of healthcare
services. There is a move toward research methodologies and practices that
cross disciplinary boundaries to produce more nuanced and critical analyses of
healthcare systems, services and the theories that underpin our work. This
module will introduce a range of research paradigms and their application when
researching health and wellbeing from an inter-professional perspective.
Detailed Syllabus
Evidence-based practice; research design; qualitative and quantitative
methodologies; evaluation of the suitability of different research techniques;
experimental research, clinical trials, case and single case studies; properties of
outcome measures; critical evaluation of research papers; overview of statistical
methods--summary measures, probability, inferential and descriptive analysis;
ethical considerations; database search; interdisciplinary research teams.
Teaching occurs via on campus lectures from week 1- 12 and up to 4 additional one on one tutorials as required specific to student's needs.
Graduate Attributes
Collaborative - Working in small groups with students from different professional backgrounds will afford interdisciplinary insights and collaboration.
Knowledgeable - this module will enable students to better find, appraise and use research to inform their practice
Proactive - Understanding how research questions are generated and addressed will ensure that students.
