Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module will further build on dietetic skills and foster professional independence in the assessment and management of individuals with varied and increased nutritional needs. Following on from Clinical Placement 1 and Community Placement this module focuses on ensuring the student has achieved competency in clinical dietetics as set out by CORU's Dietitians Registration Board, Criteria and Standards of Proficiency for Education and Training Programmes. Students will have a broad knowledge base to practice clinically at entry level.

Syllabus:

Students will undertake the collection of food intake data and the assessment of same. The student will collect and synthesise anthropometric and relevant biochemical data to provide assessment of nutritional status. Relevant health and medical, cultural, psychosocial and economic data that will aid in the identification of the nutritional problem and development of tailored therapeutic diets for patients will be collected. Students will set nutritional intervention goals and provide practical advice regarding hydration, food and eating to the patient or the patient's carers. Nutrition management may include the provision of a therapeutic diet and enteral and/or parenteral support alone or in combination with diet. Students will evaluate the dietetic management plans in following these patients in their clinical journeys. Students will provide nutrition education and counselling to service users and advocate for the nutritional management interventions to be implemented. The hospital food service will be integral to the management of these patients. Students will collaborate and integrate with the multidisciplinary team. At the end of this placement, students will be expected to manage a caseload of patients. Weeks 1-6: 2 hours of lecture and 2 hours of tutorial per week - 24 hours of contact Weeks 7-18: Practice placement - 400 hours of contact Week 19: Professional week - 4 hour lecture and 2 hour tutorial - 30 hours of contact

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Professional Accreditation Related Elements (PARE) regulations apply to Clinical Placement 2.This PARE module is non-repeatable - a repeat of the module is provided on a link-in basis in the next academic year. Preparation for placement including clinical lectures and tutorials focused on practice issues, occurs in week 1 - 6 on campus in the classroom. This prepares the students for professional communication (articulate) and skill development (agile) in advance of experiential placements in healthcare settings. A mandatory (due to CORU approval) full-time, continuous 11week professional placement in Nutrition and Dietetics in a healthcare/clinical setting follows. Student learning on placement is experiential (responsible) and there is a mixture of patient contact, case studies, discussion and tutorials. A paired placement model and peer assisted learning will be used where possible. A learning portfolio will be completed throughout. On completion of the placement, the student return for one week classroom based workshops focused on professional preparedness for their future practice. This week is the final week of the programme and the students complete their education. The module will incorporate the most up-to-date evidence base for the nutritional management of the clinical conditions covered(courageous). Students will build on skills in literature searching and critical appraisal of evidence in the development of individual case management plans (curious).
