Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module is a full-time 8 week professional placement in Nutrition and Dietetics in a clinical setting. This module provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate and develop skills in the effective independent delivery and management of nutrition care to individuals in a clinical setting. The placement also gives students the opportunity to focus on person centred care and demonstrate a competent, organised, professional and ethical approach to work, with skills required for reflective practice and independent learning in a supported setting. Students will have the opportunity to present individual case management plans to peers in weekly seminars.
This module is run in Year 1 Summer Semester and will provide the student with 300 total clinical hours.

Syllabus:
This module is a practical placement where the student is supervised in a clinical environment by an experienced Dietitian, with additional educational support and
input from University of Limerick staff. Students will undertake the collection of food intake data and the assessment of same. The student will collect and synthesise anthropometric and relevant biochemical data to provide assessment of nutritional status. Relevant health and medical, cultural, psychosocial and economic data that will aid in the identification of the nutritional problem and development of tailored therapeutic diets for inpatients will be collected. Students will set nutritional interventional goals and provide practical advice regarding food and eating to the patient or the patient's family. Nutrition management may include the provision of a therapeutic diet and enteral and/or parenteral support alone or in combination with diet. Students will evaluate the dietetic management plans in following these patients in their hospital journeys. Student learning is experiential and there is a mixture of patient contact, case studies, discussion and tutorials. A learning portfolio will be completed throughout.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
1. Demonstrate core skills in dietetic case management to include the management of a daily case workload.
2. Apply knowledge and skills as a clinical dietitian to demonstrate entry level competence in the nutritional management and counselling of individual clients.
3.Communicate in a professional manner in the counselling and educating of clients and other members of the health care team in an oral and written format
4. Apply critical thinking, reasoning and evaluation in dietetic practice and show evidence of same (written and oral presentation).
5. Collect relevant medical, social, cultural and dietetic data to competently prepare and disseminate meal plans and nutritional support regimens that meet the nutritional goals of individuals with different clinical conditions.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
1. Develop professional attitudes and practices which facilitate growth as a competent dietitian and health professional and demonstrate ability to work as a contributing member of a dietetics department and multidisciplinary team.
2. Critically reflect on self-awareness, insight and cultural competency linking to professionalism and extension of practice.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
Student learning is experiential and there is a mixture of patient contact, case studies, discussion and tutorials. A learning portfolio will be completed throughout.
The module will incorporate the most up-to-date evidence base for the nutritional management of the clinical conditions covered.
Students will build on skills in literature searching and critical appraisal of research in the development of individual case management plans.
