Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This is the first of three project modules focused on research skills. The module is largely self-directed learning supported by formative tutorials, online resources, supervisory sessions and collaborative peer learning. Students will begin by designing their project including the methodological approach, conducting their literature review and where appropriate, finalising their ethics application and commencing recruiting and data collection.

Syllabus:

The module will be largely self directed learning. Students work closely with their supervisor and other members of their research team to design and progress their research project. They may begin data collection and will commence and develop their comprehensive literature review. Syllabus includes: research design, methodology, literature searching and review and writing skills.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will • Search for, critique and synthesize new literature as the project progresses. • Systematically organise literature and/or data related to a specific research question. • Compare and evaluate techniques for data extraction/synthesis. • Design methodology and organize data collection • Apply knowledge to arrange data collection. • Formulate ethics application with supervisor where required.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will • Demonstrate an appreciation of the need for professional and ethical conduct when working in a research team. • Demonstrate self-awareness by seeking out supervision and support appropriately. • Justify the rationale and methodology of the research project.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module, students will N/A

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Students will be exposed to a range of learning activities to facilitate their planning, and write up of their project. Facilitated learning activities will include individual meetings with supervisors, access to online pre-recordings on library, research and writing skills, links to online learning, peer to peer learning and an online Q&A will meet student's learning needs (graduate attributes: curious, agile). Student learning is scaffolded with active self-directed reading (graduate attribute: curious, responsible), and opportunities for peer-to-peer discussion and learning (graduate attributes: articulate, agile). Formative learning will include students presenting their findings clearly to their supervisor and receiving formative feedback, while developing skills in communication, knowledge dissemination and the ability to articulate and justify their thinking (Graduate Attributes: articulate, agile, responsible). Research recency will be reflected in the teaching of up-to-date research skills and tools, updated pre-recordings and resources and via the direction of research supervisors to current/emerging research content in topic areas. Students will begin by designing their project including methodology, conducting their literature review, finalising their ethics application where appropriate, and commencing recruiting and data collection, where appropriate.
