Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module extends knowledge and skills developed in the units "Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics B" and "Clinical Placement Practice 1" and focuses on preparing students for their Clinical Placement 2. The provision of theoretical knowledge is continued to provide a strong foundation to implement safe and effective clinical nutrition and dietetic interventions. This subject covers in-depth nutrition and dietetic management of specialist areas such as intensive care, infectious diseases, burns, gastrointestinal surgery, brain and spinal injury and diseases and disorders in paediatric medicine. The module will further build on the theory and application of oral, enteral and parenteral nutrition support in the individual management of complex clinical patient groups. This unit will also focus on current issues in Dietetics to include advances in dietetics, advocacy and leadership. Simulation and case studies based on these clinical conditions and diseases will be the foundation for the students to develop skills in synthesising medical and nutritional information into the formulations of individual nutritional care plans, dietetic education and evaluation in preparation for clinical placement. The module will be delivered over 6 weeks in Semester 1 Year 2 prior to students going on their second clinical placement.

Syllabus:

Pathophysiology, nutritional aetiology, clinical features, medical and nutritional management of a range of clinical conditions and diseases - intensive care nutrition, infectious diseases, burns, gastrointestinal surgery, brain and spinal injury and diseases and disorders in paediatric medicine; formulation of nutrition diagnoses and management plans for individuals; Methods to collect anthropometric and body composition data, dietary data and food habits in clinical settings and for different clinical conditions; Nutrition goal setting and development of client centred, evidence based or best practice nutrition management plans or guidelines; development of dietary plans and nutrition support regimes; documentation of plans in the medical and case notes; interview skills, communicating effectively; professionalism, ethical practice and organisational standards. This module will run for 6 weeks Semester 1 Year 2 -4 hours lecture and 4 hour workshops/practicals/tutorials/simulated learning experiences ) -ideally scheduled across one day each week. It is expected that students will participate in self-study activities related to classroom materials.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will 1. Integrate knowledge of disease into the nutritional assessment, formulation of individual nutrition care plan and the dietetic management of a clinical case. 2. Apply clinical reasoning in the application of nutrition care plans in individual case management. 3. Evaluate the role of nutrition and diet in the aetiology and management of a disease or specific clinical conditions. 4.
