Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
In this module students will learn the role of medicine and nutrition in the prevention and alleviation of acute and chronic diseases and disorders. Students will develop an understanding of an individualised approach in diet modification in the holistic treatment of patients with medical conditions in which nutrition and dietetics play a pivotal role. Interpretation of medical theory, pathophysiology and pharmacology to aid in goal setting in the achievement of effective outcomes. Modifying diet to alter the disease process and providing nutrition support to patients with increased nutritional requirements not met by diet will be covered. Paediatrics will also be taught. Drug-nutrient and drug-food interactions of commonly prescribed medications will be explored.
Syllabus:
Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases, Disorders of the Upper and Lower Gastrointestinal Tract, Paediatrics, Renal Disease, Metabolic Disorders, Trauma, Burns, Oncology, Organ Transplantation.
This module will run for 10 weeks in Year 1, Semester 2 Spring - week 3 to week 12. 2 hour lecture and 2 hour tutorial per week

1. Demonstrate fundamental understanding of the pathophysiology of a range of medical conditions that are applicable to dietetic practice.
2. Identify the role of commonly prescribed medications for the prevention and treatment of medical conditions and their impact on nutrition and dietetic interventions
3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of drug-nutrient, drug-food interactions for commonly prescribed medications

1. Appreciate the role of medical and pharmacology in the management of acute and chronic medical conditions and in co-management with nutrition and dietetic therapeutic interventions.
