Prerequisite Modules:
Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module is targetted at qualified health professionals taking the Advanced Healthcare/Clinical Practice programmes, who either graduated some time ago, before behaviour change was commonly taught, or who want to further develop their skills in the area of health behavour change. This module will teach health behaviour change theories from psychology and develop students' skills to evaluate existing interventions and develop their own. This will support the implementation of national programmes such as Slaintecare and Making Every Contact Count. Students will be able to facilitate more effective behaviour change in their patients, and develop skills for creating interventions within their work contexts.
This module will also be offered to Postgraduate Certificates in Advanced Clinical Practice (3902 and 3901).
Syllabus:
As part of this module, students will cover main current theories and models of behaviour change, alongside critical discussion of these approaches; they will critically appraise contemporary behaviour change literature, current and proposed interventions, and in relation to relevant clinical populations for their own work setting; and develop skills in designing behaviour change interventions.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
* Describe relevant theories and models of behaviour change, identify strengths and weaknesses of each approach, and be able to identify appropriate approaches for a target behaviour change.
* Demonstrate the ability to systematically search, identify, critically appraise, synthesize and summarise/present implications from contemporary behaviour change literature.
* Critically evaluate current/proposed behaviour change interventions.
* Describe and select appropriate behaviour change techniques to address specific goals, and integrate these techniques into a behaviour change intervention.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
* Demonstrate an appreciation for the complexity of implementing behaviour change interventions.
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
This module will be delivered in a highly structured and interactive online format. The delivery will follow a flipped classroom format where student are provided with information in advance through a virtual learning environment. Students will then develop this knowledge through tutor-facilitated online activities.
