Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
To give students a comprehensive overview of the major currents and trends in European cinema in the post Second World War period with the advent of the French Nouvelle Vague being considered as a watershed event.
To build on students prior knowledge and exposure to film studies and enhance their ability to analyse and critique films.
Syllabus:
This module will build on students prior experience of film studies and will involve a comprehensive overview of the major cinematic movements in contemporary Europe over the last fifty years with an introduction to some of the major directors of this period and their oeuvre. The module will also examine the techniques of film as employed by these directors, their critical approaches and how major theoretical movements have been influential in their work. It will lastly consider the impact of the digital revolution on film making and the film industry.

Identify the different movements in post war cinema.
Appreciate the influences of film movements across national boundaries.
Apply theoretical approaches to an increasingly globalised industry.
Undertake an in depth study on one or a group of films.
Critically appraise the most recent developments in film production, distribution and projection.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
Students will have three lecture/ tutorial contact hours. These will be delivered in one session to facilitate the showing of extended extracts and entire films. The session will include lecture style presentation, discussion and practical analysis.
Students will be expected to deliver group and individual presentation on selected topics.
