Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
The aim of this module is to provide for in-depth knowledge of conceptual frames and theoretical perspectives that support the creation and performance of contemporary dance choreographies and to support students to further develop their research into performance-making, with a focus on creating work which is thought provoking and imaginative rather than safe and conventional. Throughout the module each student will continue to investigate a range of approaches towards creating and performing original performing set choreographies and improvisational scores.
Syllabus:
The knowledge is structured according to the principles and practices underpinning history and tradition of Western Contemporary and Post-Modern dance techniques and performance. Its transmission is through live, text, video, DVD and studio-based, methods and modes of inquiry based on aesthetic, historical, cultural theories and concepts that have informed the development Western Contemporary and Post-Modern choreography and performance to date
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Synthesise concepts foundational to the tradition of Western Contemporary and Post-Modern dance performance towards the creation and performance of choreographic studies
Compile a portfolio which includes selected theoretical approaches for text-based study and practice of choreography and performance.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
Practice and rehearse a range of choreographic works and improvisational scores with a clear focus on the distinct kinaesthetic and expressive content of each work.
Integrate dance with music and other media, as appropriate, in developing choreographic
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
Choreograph works in which the themes and concepts are evident in the content and structure.
Perform a programme of ensemble and solo choreographic works.
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
Workshops and ensemble master classes, introducing methods by which to structure improvisations from the wide range of sources informing current contemporary and post-modern choreographic and interdisciplinary performance practices, to explore movement themes and choreographic concepts.
Studio-based engagement with the process of devising original choreographic works, under the direction of established professional artists,
Performance presentations of work-in-progress for the purpose of critical feedback
Prescribed reading, study of video and DVD materials in lectures and tutorials.
Introduction to theoretical frames, method and modes of inquiry to support practice-based research. Lectures and tutorials
