Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The objective of this module is to continue to develop students engagement to the repertoires of diverse Irish traditional dance performance practices within a variety of theoretical, methodological and dance perforomance contexts. Students will learn to embody repertoires and their respective aesthetics from master tutors.This will further hone the performance skills of students and will enhance their critical awareness of a range of diverse performance practices and their respective aesthetic systems within the Irish dance tradition and related dance traditions.

Syllabus:

The syllabus is structured within a variety of theoretical, methodological and dance performance contexts. It consists of practical dance workshops, classes in dance history, Irish cultural studies and self-directed dance research. This combination encourages students to synthesize the accumulated theoretical, methodological and embodied dance performance knowledge in a reflective manner.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

1. Demonstrate a theoretical and practical understanding of the history of Irish dance practices. 2. Evaluate presentations of dance: written and performed. 3. Synthesize the accumulated theoretical, methodological and dance performance knowledge.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

1. Display a commitment to professional dance training and performance. 2. Illustrate a good ethical practice. 3. Embrace different value systems in Irish dance practices.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

1. Perform dances from specific repertoires which are sensitive to the contexts and histories of those repertoires. 2. Apply accumulated theoretical and practical knowledge to new choreographic work. 3. Execute good professional practice in training and performance. 4. Continue to expand the technical skills and movement proficiency and capacity to embody dance knowledge.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will be taught in a variety of practical,studio-based dance workshops, lectures and seminars. Students will learn to understand Irish step dance practices in a kinesthetically embodied and historically informed way.
