Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The goal of the Induction Academy is to introduce and foster a welcoming and inclusive learning environment, to provide information about the structure of the programme, and to set expectations concerning assessment. During the Induction Academy, students will meet the Faculty who will be teaching them, learn key study skills, learn to use university resources such as the library and other student supports, get to know other students going through the same experience, and also be exposed to important foundational elements of their studies.

Syllabus:

1. Information session on programme structure and marking criteria. 2. Introduction to virtual learning environment and other UL online student resources. 3. Workshop on study skills and developing as an effective learner. 4. Drop-in session to install statistical software on students' personal laptops. 5. Meet-and-greet sessions with classmates and faculty. 6. One-to-one meetings with assigned academic advisor. 7. Workshop on academic writing. 8. Workshop on library resources, effective literature searching, and use of EndNote. 9. Information session on pastoral supports for students. 10. Workshop on academic integrity and plagiarism. 11. Guest lecture(s) from adjunct/guest speakers. 12. Additional sessions that will change depending on circumstances. e.g. Climate Fresk, etc.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1. demonstrate an understanding of the structure of the programme and the criteria used to evaluate students. 2. use the virtual learning environment. 3. access the chosen statistical software on their personal laptops. 4. access library and other learning resources. 5. access advice and assistance if they are having problems during their studies.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1. integrate with peers, staff and the University systems. 2. discuss problems of integration with classmates and staff.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Over several days at the start of the first semester, the Induction Academy will take place in-person on campus at the Kemmy Business School in our dedicated economics teaching room, an active learning classroom whereby the space has been configured to maximize collaborative learning. Students will actively participate and contribute to presentations and workshops. After the Induction Academy, students will have an opportunity to submit an assignment (based on a topic discussed during the Academy) to be assessed formatively to allow students to gauge the quality of their work and receive feedback from Faculty.
