Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The aim of this module is to develop students understanding of important societal challenges as well as providing them with insights into the work of multilateral institutions around these challenges. These include, but are not limited to, the economics of climate change, the economics of European integration, the causes and consequences of economic inequality and the economics of an aging population. Students will cover one such challenge in any given semester and learn through a combination of classroom-based content and guest talks from economists working in international institutions. The latter element is designed to bring the themes discussed in class to life and should develop the student's understanding of global economic institutions.

Syllabus:

The syllabus will be designed to have some element of flexibility involved to enable student to examine topical aspects within the economics of global challenges. The range of topics that may be covered are 1:The economics of climate change; 2: The economics of European integration 3: The causes and consequences of economic inequality or 4: The economics of an aging population. The module involves a combination of classroom-based content and as well as a workshop/guest seminars where students will interact with professionals from government and multilateral agencies to discuss the work these institutions in the topic covered in class. Students will be required to undertake assessment based upon classroom based activities and submit a reflective learning assignment.

Evaluate the application of economic theory within the context of global challenges 3. Analyse the contemporary research related to the economics of global challenges

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1. To discuss international economic issues and concepts with peers, professionals from international institutions. 2. Reflect on the role that international institutions are playing in meeting key economic challenges 3: Express an opinion on prevailing issues within the global economy

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module is taught through a combination of classroom-based content and guest talks from economists working in international institutions. The latter element is designed to bring the themes discussed in class to life and should develop the student's understanding of global economic institutions. Student will be assigned reading material, and will be expected to conduct independent research, prior to guest speakers or lectures. The University of Limerick Graduate Attributes will be developed by: Broadening students' knowledge and proactivity through encouraging independent and directed research; emphasising student's responsibility to organise their time in an efficient manner and to work to specific deadlines. The module will draw from recent policy developments and published research in the relevant topics to help extend student's understanding.
