Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

To provide students with lab-based instruction on how to use various software applications. To enable students to develop Web sites and e-learning courses. To emphasise the importance of usability, accessibility, and design principles. To introduce students to relevant software tools. To enable students to collaborate online with peers.

Syllabus:

This lab-based module involves lab sessions on courseware design software tools. During the lab sessions, students use software applications. In addition, students collaborate online to share learning resources. Although there are no lectures in this module, students are expected to apply the theories and practices they learn in other modules to the projects they undertake as part of this module. The module is assessed through continuous assessment only (no end-of-semester examination).

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: Use advanced features of various software applications for courseware design. Apply information design principles to the development of projects. Describe steps in the development process. Manage projects successfully. Choose the most appropriate software application(s) for developing a web site or e-learning course, depending on the projects requirements.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: Participate in online discussions. Share their expertise and problem-solving skills with peers in online forums.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module is taught in a lab setting, through block delivery. Students come on campus for two days for intensive plenary sessions. These sessions are supplemented with resources, learning objects and online discussions offering peer and tutor support through the University VLE. It responds to graduate attributes by encouraging creativity and fostering an autonomous, proactive and responsible approach to course design.
