Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The end of Year 1 of the two-year programme, the summer school serves as a pivotal experience, synthesising the content and learning from the first year while fostering participants' development as reflective teachers of Politics & Society. This immersive programme integrates theoretical insights and practical experiences, encouraging participants to critically examine their positionality as educators in the subject. Additionally, the summer school acts as a bridge to Year 2, providing a comprehensive preamble to upcoming modules and learning opportunities. By connecting and reinforcing learning across and between modules, the summer school serves as a lynchpin for the programme, supporting continuity and deepening engagement in the participants' journey.

Teachers as reflexive practitioner's; Teacher agency and identity; Peer Learning; Linking theory to Practice; Participatory research methodologies; Active Learning Methodologies; The aesthetic dimension of teaching; Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK)

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Identify aspects of teaching effectiveness to inform their developing professional identity as a teacher of Politics and Society. Critically analyze philosophical and sociological perspectives on education, society, and schooling within national and international context relevant to their developing identities as practicioners of politics and society.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Reflect on their role as democratic educators, integrating education, sociological and political content knowledge accrued to date. Demonstrate imagination, empathy, and intercultural communication skills in addressing the challenges of fostering inclusive and equitable educational environments.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The Summer School will take place in-person over three days. The participating teachers will have opportunities to work in small groups to tackle problem-solving scenarios, as well as participate in classroom debates. Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) will be introduced in support of these authentic scenarios drawn from practice. Also, students will be invited to engage with readings and reflections linked to the portfolio on the basis for developing their identity as Politics and Society teachers.
