Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module focuses on the ways in which mentoring and coaching are key leadership tools in fostering both the development educational leadership. Participants will learn about the contemporary research on mentoring and coaching, will analyse case studies, and engage in with coaching experiences to develop the requisite knowledge, skills and dispositions vis-a-vis developing mentoring and coaching as part of their leadership repertoire. Among the themes to be addressed on the module will be: participants own experiences of mentoring and coaching and how mentoring and coaching are framed, enacted and evaluated in educational settings. The module will also have a focus on the development of social disposition and professional skills necessary to effectively coach and be coached as leaders. The module will also examine the role of coaching personal development and performance management.

Syllabus:

Definitions of coaching and to mentoring with a view to differentiation between coaching and mentoring in terms of focus, goals design, duration, processes. Mentoring and coaching for leadership development protocols and practices; types and contexts of coaching, organizational contexts for mentoring and coaching; need and goal setting; coaching dispositions and skills; ethical coaching for leaders; development of social disposition and professional skills necessary to effectively coach and be coached as leaders; the role of coaching personal development and performance management.

Upon completion of the module participants will: • Differentiate between coaching and mentoring. • Be knowledgeable of models of coaching and of mentoring. • Evaluate the implications of different perspectives on learning for framing, enacting and evaluating both mentoring and coaching. • Demonstrate critical understanding of the key protocols and practices associated with both mentoring and coaching in schools. • Understand and appreciate the significance of mentoring and coaching in building school leaders.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

• Appreciate the significance of the different yet complementary roles of mentoring and coaching in their own development as leaders. • Appreciate the dynamics of power relations in the context of mentoring and coaching.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will be delivered online. Online classes will take place via UL's chosen learning-management system SULIS and will include communication, content delivery, and assessment tools to facilitate the teaching-and-learning process. Flexibility is a core aim of this online delivery. Lectures will be delivered asynchronously thus lectures and class activities don't take place in real time. Instead, students can complete the tasks whenever their schedules permit. Discussion forums that enable students to engage in conversations about class content with the module leader and with a moderator will occur in real time. Online pedagogies and e-tivities will be employed to ensure dynamic delivery for an engaging student experience. Project work will include students engaging with a coach and their personal learning and reflections will form part of the online discussions and the assessment process in order to ensure practical application.
