Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This practicum module is related to the practicum placement that requires the student to do a professional placement in an external guidance service in Year 2 comprising of a minimum of 150 hours. It is a linked module to Practicum 2: Practice Placement (ID: 3215)in Semester 2.

Syllabus:

Module provides students with first-hand experience of guidance counselling practice in an educational setting under the supervision of a qualified guidance counsellor in an external professional setting. Settings can include post-primary, FET, higher education or employment sector. Module concentrates on the integrated approach to guidance counselling. It requires students to be critically reflective of current practice, familiar with the application of theoretical concepts and practice based guidance approaches, and to evaluate their learning and development over the course of the placement.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Demonstrate the ability to effectively develop and manage a guidance service based on theoretical orientations and observations from professional practice. Critically reflect on complex situations and decision-making processes involved in supporting students and adults from a personal and social, educational and career perspective. Employ a range of different guidance counselling interventions based on client's needs and individual circumstances.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

Demonstrate an awareness of individuals' social, cognitive and emotional development across the lifespan in the use of appropriate guidance counselling interventions. Exhibit an appreciation of the contextual factors in the planning and delivery of an effective guidance service. Adhere to an ethical framework in response to the specific needs of clients at different developmental stages.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

In this module students are on external placement and are required to keep a reflective log of their learning experiences in their professional placement. Up to date research and literature taught on the programme is integrated into their assignment of a professional portfolio.
