Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

To develop the student's knowledge of methodologies aimed at reducing the risk of injury and loss. To familiarise the students' with health and safety risk management systems. To facilitate students' in applying the concept of managing health and safety risks in a systematic manner. To facilitate the student in developing and implementing effective communication systems for health and safety information, including consultation. To aid the student in understanding the nature of reactive and proactive monitoring systems and auditing and review systems in health and safety matters.

Syllabus:

Health & Safety Organisation in the Workplace : the role of the employer, safety officers, safety representatives and safety committees. Developing a Health and Safety culture: general principles of health and safety management. Health & Safety Legislation : overarching and targeted legislation, codes of practice, standards. Hazard and Risk Identification & Management and Safety Statement preparation. Specific risk assessment examples and how they should be controlled. Health and Safety Monitoring Systems : implementation and operation of the policy based on identifying hazards and assessing and controlling risks. Health and Safety Management Systems : OSHAS 18001, health and safety auditing systems, development and implementation. REACH Regulations. Emergency Planning: life safety management and asset protection, evacuation management. Safety training procedures and benefits.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to 1. Outline in detail the roles and functions of employers, employees, safety officers and safety committees within a company. 2. Describe the general principles of safety management within an organisation. 3. Distinguish between the main occupational safety and health management systems. 4. Identify the key features of OSHAS 18001 with respect to implementation and safety auditing. 5. Outline the key stages involved in carrying out a risk assessment in the workplace. 6. Prepare risk assessments with regard to specific hazards. 7. Recognise the fundamental requirements for effective safety training programmes. 8. Evaluate the main performance indicators of health and safety within an organisation. 9. Interpret relevant legislation and codes of practice in the relevant areas. 10. Devise appropriate emergency management strategies and plans.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to demonstrate an appreciation for the importance safety culture and leadership in the effective management of safety and health in the workplace environment.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will be taught during the semester via a formal interactive lecturing mode. Students taking this module will normally have gained either direct or indirect health & safety experience during their co-op placement and it is envisaged that this module will draw on their experiences. In the context of graduate attributes, it is envisaged that this module will aid students in becoming more curious, knowledgeable and open-minded in the broader context of workplace health & safety while heightening their sense of personal, social and professional responsibility around current safety issues. Within lecture time, significant group work will occur, allowing for strong interactive and collaborative opportunities for each student. The module will allow the student to develop their innovative and creative abilities in the context of developing alternative approaches to specific safety management strategies. Students will also find a significant opportunity to enhance their interpersonal communication, articulation and presentation skills through the medium of oral presentation mode.
