Prerequisite Modules:
Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module will provide a range of resources and activities to help students to develop a broad understanding of research, the actions required to translate research into practice and how to implement and disseminate research. The module addresses the nature of research (philosophies, paradigms and theories), the purpose of research investigations and research integrity. It covers the topics of literature review, critical evaluation of research material and the subsequent identification of research questions. In addition, it will give students an understanding of research design, methods of data collection and analysis, providing students a grounding in both qualitative and quantitative traditions. The students will also be made aware of the ethical and access issues related to empirical research, including issues related to data collection, data storage and data utilisation.
Syllabus:
As part of this module student will cover project management skills designed to support the timely completion of meaningful research; they will be required to critically evaluate sources of evidence and manage data sources; examine research paradigms and their associated research methods and methodologies; explore research ethics and research integrity considerations, including the challenges faced in meeting those responsibilities as a researcher; students will be required to critically evaluate research quality and relevance, as well as analyse qualitative and quantitative data.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Describe the significance of research to the advancement of their respective education and health discipline and context.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the dominant paradigms in research and their aligned methods of inquiry
- Synthesise and critically analyse relevant research designs, paradigms, and methodological approaches, including systematic sources of bias and relative strengths and weaknesses.
- Demonstrate the ability to systematically search, identify, critically appraise, synthesize, and summarize/present implications from the available evidence/literature.
- Select and design appropriate instruments to address specific research questions.
- Identify the challenges faced in meeting their responsibilities as researchers, and explain strategies that are used to deal with those challenges
- Compare and contrast key strategies to support the promotion of research rigour within education and health sciences research.
- Examine data using at least two different analysis strategies.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an appreciation for the logistics of time, funding and resources required to be able to produce a realistic timeline for a research project
- Acknowledge and comply with current national and international guidelines and legislation in the ethics of research involving humans and animals.
- Display an understanding of ethical principles in education and health science research.
- Acknowledge the necessity for adopting an ethical research approach and demonstrate an aligned awareness of how to adopt such an approach in their research inquiry
- Demonstrate an appreciation for the importance of honesty, reliability, objectivity, impartiality, communication, duty of care, fairness and responsibility in research practice.
- Demonstrate an appreciation for the impact of personal and cognitive biases on research findings
- Defend the importance of a reflexive and reflective stance within research and inquiry.
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
This module will be delivered in a highly structured and interactive online format. The delivery will follow a flipped classroom format where students are provided with information in advance via asynchronous lectures and podcasts and then will be provided with an opportunity to apply this knowledge during tutor facilitated workshops. Continuous assessment will be built in to help support student engage and the provision of formative feedback to students as they progress through the module.
