Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module is designed to give managers from a non-financial background the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the basic principles of business finance and become more confident in addressing matters of a financial nature. Initially the module provides a practical overview of financial matters and converts financial terms and concepts into practical tools for analysing organisational performance. Significant effort will be placed on the development of proficiencies in a range of skills required for successful interpretation of organisational accounts, evaluation of investment projects, financing options, dividend policy, and other key elements of financial decision making. The module specifically addresses the needs of front line managers with current or future financially related responsibilities

Syllabus:

Syllabus includes: Business formation, choice of legal form; Introducing financial statements, ratio analysis; The role of the firm and agency theory; Project appraisal, to include DCF, capital budgeting; Sources of finance; Capital structure; Dividend policy; Efficiency: shares and markets; Share valuation; Corporate social responsibility in the finance area

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Demonstrate understanding of how to analyse and interpret organisational accounts and financial reports. Evaluate projects using a range of techniques including discounted cash flow, profitability analysis etc. Understand the implications of capital structure and dividend policy decisions, and the factors impinging on a company's share price. Synthesize knowledge and understanding of how businesses operate from a financial perspective. Demonstrate the ability to develop decisions utilising financial analysis techniques.

Acknowledge the importance of financial information as an aid to greater control and management of the business. Understand the role of the firm and of the financial manager within that context. Appreciate the part played by responsible investment and finance

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will be taught in both interactive workshop based format and by distance learning. While based on essential academic theories, concepts and techniques there will also be significant focus afforded to individual personal development allied with the practical application of learning within the workplace.
