Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The aim of this module is to develop students' skills and knowledge in capital markets and corporate finance to give students an awareness and understanding of the current issues in, and key features of, the financial markets; Money Markets, Bond Markets, Foreign Exchange Markets and Derivative markets. This module provides learners with the latest concepts, knowledge, skills and theories in corporate finance to equip students with the necessary skills to make corporate decisions on financial matters and apply it to Machine Learning.

Syllabus:

This course develops students' understanding of key topics in the general operation of capital markets and corporate finance both in theory and in practice. This module examines the global capital markets with a specific lean on European sources of finance, types of financial intermediation and financial systems in Europe and their relative importance in the world economy. It describes market mechanisms and prices and gives a broad introduction to the relevant regional financial and monetary issues. It further equips students with necessary skills to make corporate decisions on financial matters. Current theory on dividend policy, share valuation and capital structure will be incorporated into the syllabus.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

At the end of this module students will be able to: 1) Demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts and vocabulary of corporate finance. 2) Explain how interest rates are determined and the role they play in asset valuation. 3) Compare and contrast the various types of financial institutions operating within the global financial markets and assess the relevance and suitability of each financial market for issuers and investors. 4) Demonstrate an understanding of the effect and influence of the regulatory framework on financial institutions and on the markets in which they operate. 5) Develop the ability to appraise the key characteristics of the short term and long term debt markets and the financial position of companies within these frameworks. 6) Compute and analyse financial asset prices using appropriate asset pricing theories and incorporating time vale of money into decision-making. 7) Identify appropriate policies for dividends and evaluate the main sources of finance in terms of capital structure. 8) Describe and evaluate the main sources of finance available to a company.

At the end of this module students will be able to: 1) Develop an awareness on the prevailing issues in contemporary finance. 2) Develop an appreciation for the role of ethics and transparency within the global financial markets.

The module will be delivered using online lectures, virtual labs and tutorials.
