Poetry will be closely read in tutorials and students will then undertake secondary reading and self-directed research. At the start of the course, students will be provided with a list of recommended essays and reviews for reading, on Sulis. This personal work will give students the opportunity to practice the skills of reviewing and analysing poetry. A wide range of classroom and online activities and authentic materials will be used to create speaking, listening, writing and reading opportunities for the students. The teaching staff will be familiar with specific traits of UL graduates and these traits will be taken into account when designing tasks. They will also draw on research relating to the use of poetry as a teaching and learning resource in the language classroom. A poetry reading will be organised during the semester and students will be encouraged to attend poetry events, for example, IMRAM, An Fhéile Bheag Filíochta etc.
