Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
To introduce students from various disciplines (e.g. anthropology, comparative religion, ethnology, history, literature, sociology, etc.) to the area of folkloristics and to the study of Irish folklore
Syllabus:
An introduction to Irish folklore with special reference to the following areas: definitions of folklore, folklore collection and classification; verbal arts and minor genres; story-telling and narrative genres; indigenous and international tale-types in Ireland; and traditional custom and belief, including calendar customs
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
Having completed this module, students will be able to:
- situate traditional verbal arts and practices in their cultural and social contexts
- explain the development of Folklore studies in the Irish context
- evaluate the relevant folklore repertoire with reference to a chosen theme and present findings on same.

Having completed this module, students will be able to:
- discuss basic concepts of the discipline of Folklore
- demonstrate in written form an in-depth understanding of specialised topics within the field

Module is delivered through formal lectures and workshops.
The small class group group allows for high level of student participation and guidance with regard to self-directed study.
