Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module will enable the student to demonstrate an understanding of the key knowledge and skills required for professional development in contemporary paramedic practice. The student will reflect on their current position within the profession and illustrate personal development strategies, commensurate with progression of their current role and professional goals. Emphasis will be placed on self-reflection, international best practice and professional identity.
Syllabus:
The module will impart the fundamentals of continuing professional development and professional competence. Professional attributes and their application to contemporary paramedic practice are emphasized. Opportunities to engage in continuous professional development are highlighted and developed with reference to identified gaps in knowledge/practice.
Peer mentorship and peer assessment will be used to enable the student to maximize their learning potential as part of a small class group. Strategies to enable lifelong learning are developed through guided self-reflection

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Analyse the meaning of paramedic professionalism in the light of the current literature and research.
Consider the influence of the evolving role of the paramedic on their professional identity
Illustrate evidence of self-analysis and development of a career plan that will guide future personal and professional development.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Appreciate the multifaceted roles and responsibilities of prehospital practitioners.
Critically explore the concept of lifelong learning and continued professional development
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate a clear and logical portfolio of short, medium and long-term career goals
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
This module is delivered in a blended environment, with both face-to-face teaching and a virtual learning environment.
Participants will work through course materials and readings and undertake directed learning activities online. Lectures and/or problem-based learning tutorials, are scaffolded by online learning resources and small group tutorials. Task based exercises will encourage participants to maximize their learning potential. This approach combines educational methods that encourage self-directed learning, reflection on personal experience, and critical thinking while at the same time allowing access to extensive online resources. Students will develop a personal development strategy based on guided self-reflection.
This learning environment will stimulate students to be knowledgeable, proactive, creative, collaborative, articulate and responsible in line with the attributes required of graduates.
