Prerequisite Modules:
Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
The module aims to equip students with key skills in designing a research project of relevance to their practice. Having identified a research topic they will plan a research proposal for future implementation. Paramedic Studies is a fledgling profession therefore students will be tutored through the key research components in preparation for future research work.
Syllabus:
The knowledge and skills necessary to arrive at an appropriate research question will be developed in the first part of the module. In particular, students will be familiarised with previous research questions of relevance to their interests, and explore the literature underpinning the research question. Students will conduct a thorough literature review to consider how the research question might be refined and addressed. In particular, students will develop their knowledge of a range of research approaches and study designs, but they will quickly focus on the approach and design of relevance to their proposed study. The supervisor support in the development of a proposal and extensive literature review should enable students to produce an effective research plan including strategies to evaluate data analysis presentation and target journals for publication.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
Develop an analytical research proposal to address a question of importance to practitioners in the subject area
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
Identify and clearly articulate a research question
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
Conduct a literature review, Identify a suitable research methodolgy and study design, Discuss ethical issues suurrounding the proposed research question, Discuss mathematical evaluation of the research question.
Establish a report writing structure for academic work.
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
Mature students will be immersed into academia and understand the link between research theory and actual practice. Candidates will be able to comprehend and validate guidelines which dictate there everyday practice. Experience in a Medical School environment will allow them to access assistance and opinion from graduates and students in associated health science disciplines.
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to engage in meaningful reflection about the historical development and present place of their discipline in the world and where and how they fit in it. Reassess their positions, values, and future plans in light of their life experience and critical self-analysis.
