Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module will focus on leadership and management theories relevant to healthcare and examine their application in contemporary prehospital education. With the recent shift from vocational to academic education in pre hospital care, the module will give the student the skills and knowledge to effectively mentor students and junior staff in the clinical environment.

Syllabus:

The syllabus includes theoretical models of healthcare leadership and theories of learning. Students will research the skills and attributes of an effective leader or manager and compare with their experiences thus far in their careers. Emphasis is placed on all of the components required for a successful mentor/mentee relationship, including but not limited to, effective communication, personality types and clashes, learning styles and teaching theories, assessment strategies and the feedback loop. Benefits and challenges associated with mentorship in the context of prehospital education will be explored.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Analyse clinical leadership and management models in the healthcare setting Describe the benefits of mentorship to the mentor, the mentee and the organization Apply strategies for mentoring in current clinical environment. Devise a strategy to implement mentorship in daily work environment that benefits all stakeholders

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module is delivered in a blended environment, with both face-to-face teaching and a virtual learning environment. Participants will work through course materials and readings and undertake directed learning activities online. They will develop leadership and mentorship skills that will benefit themselves, their colleagues and the organization. Lectures and/or problem-based learning tutorials, are scaffolded by online learning resources and small group tutorials. Task based exercises will encourage participants to maximize their learning potential. This approach combines educational methods that encourage self-directed learning, reflection on personal experience, and critical thinking while at the same time allowing access to extensive online resources. This learning environment will stimulate students to be knowledgeable, proactive, creative, collaborative, articulate and responsible in line with the attributes required of graduates.
