Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
The purpose of this module is to allow students gain actually emergency medical experience by completing a minimum of 420 hours in an emergency ambulance. The students will be accompanied by an experienced practitioner and must keep a learning portfolio of patients encountered. While workload cannot be predicted the focus of the module is on the trauma care of the adult patient.
A pass or fail grade will be offered based on the achievement of clinical competencies - where specific patient types have not been encountered this may be completed by means of scenario skill stations.
Syllabus:
The student will be placed in a State ambulance service and provide Paramedic care to patients encountered. During the placement the student will be expected to undertake the full range of Paramedic duties under the supervision of a suitably qualified mentor.
All interventions and assessments are required to be logged in the UL Paramedic Studies reflective practice online system.

Operational context permitting students should complete in the following conditions:
- Intervention in hours of darkness
- Intervention during daylight hours
- Intervention in multiple patient scenario
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
Primary education will be provided by a qualified peer mentor (buddy system). Upon completion of each patient call students must document the evidence behind their practice in their reflective practice log. Shortfalls in evidence must be identified and will provide grounds for future research topics.
