Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module forms part of the core curriculum for the BScPS. This course involves an introduction to some of the fundamentals of recognising and managing healthcare emergencies and sets the scene for further work. The module aims to introduce students to: • Patient evaluation and the importance of excellent communications skills • The core components of major incident management • Collaborative small group learning • The structure of Irish health care services • Self-care Professional issues in healthcare

Syllabus:

On completion of the module, students should be able to: • Conduct a patient evaluation, including taking a history • Describe the structure and organisation of the National Ambulance Service • Describe the structure and organisation of Irish health services • Explain the role of Critical Incident Stress Debriefing • How to work in teams • Describe the principles underpinning professional practice • Describe the key components of a major incident *In addition, this module also includes the following specific objectives as defined by the PreHospital Emergency Care Council including management of: 1.Primary Survey 2.Secondary Survey 3.Hazardous Material Incident 4.Major Emergency 5.Civil Disorder 6.The Well­Being of the Paramedic

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

1.Identify the component parts of a Primary survey for a medical and trauma patient as appropriate: 2. Identify the component parts of a secondary survey for a medical and trauma patient as appropriate. 3. Acquire the necessary knowledge to deal with a Hazardous Material Incident 4. Define the types and control measures required in dealing with a Major Emergency 5. Describe special challenges associated with managing Civil Disorder. 6. Identify the mental and physical Well­Being of the Paramedic

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

Primary Survey 1. Discuss the issues surrounding patient dignity on scene. 2. Recognise and respond appropriately to the feelings patients experience during assessment. 3. Communicate in an appropriate professional and caring manner, during patient assessment, with patients as well as with family members and friends of the patient. 4. Explain the need for team work when multidisciplinary pre-hospital emergency services are at an incident. 5. Recognise that all patients have the capacity to make decisions until the contrary is demonstrated. 6. Support a patient physically and emotionally through a decontamination process. 7. Discuss the concept of the most (help) for the most (patients). 8. Discuss the importance of neutrality for paramedics during a civil disorder. 9. Discuss the importance of understanding the response to trauma, illness, death and dying and communicating effectively with the patient's family.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

Primary Survey 1. On simulated patients complete an appropriate patient assessment. 2. Using simulated scenarios identify hazards associated with chemical incidents. 3. Demonstrate the correct application of protective personal equipment. 4. Demonstrate evacuation drills for abnormal patient egress.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Utilising historical case scenarios and major disasters the student will recreate care and safety strategies under MIMMS guidelines. A comparison study will then be undertaken to evaluate preparedness versus actual outcomes in such historical cases. Allowing students to recreate actual events will increase knowledge to enable proactive management of future events.
