Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
The module will provide a framework for paramedics working in the community and will explore the concepts of health and population health and, in particular, will focus on public health models, the wider determinants of health and the measurement and impact of health inequalities. The module will also consider the principles of community development from a primary care perspective.
Syllabus:
This module aids the Paramedic in holistic patient centred care and allows students to Understand and appraise recognised models of public health and health determinants. Evaluate the theories and models of health promotion and how the Paramedic practitioner can deliver such messages. Utilise epidemiological data to underpin knowledge and practice. Understand the challenges inherent in adopting community development approaches in primary care.

Developing a broad and integrated knowledge and understanding of the theories and models of health promotion.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
Understand complex social, religious, economic, gender, race based determinants of public health and assimilate such confounders to Paramedic practice.

The application of the skills underpinning community development approaches in practice.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
Through extensive outreach to the community Paramedic students will develop a new understanding of the communities they serve. A deeper understanding of complex and chronic detriments of health which have previously only been reviewed based on acute exacerbations.
