Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module enables the student to apply the principles of prehospital care to patient assessment and management. Drawing on experience gained on year one placements to date, the students learning is scaffolded through small group workshops and lectures to synthesise the practical elements required to care for an array of patients in the prehospital environment.
Syllabus:
Drawing on experience gained in Semester 2 placement module 9239, the students' learning is scaffolded through small group workshops and lectures to synthesise the practical elements required to care for an array of patients in the prehospital environment. The syllabus for this module is guided by learning opportunities identified on placement during module 9239 and aligns with the Prehospital Emergency Care Council Education and Training Standards.
Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Describe in detail the care management of ill and injured patients.
Describe in detail the prehospital assessment of ill and injured patients.
Identify the effects and side effects of medications approved for administration by Paramedics.
Discuss the steps required to perform paramedic skills.
Construct handovers and case reports using medical terminology

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
This module combines small group teaching and lectures providing the theoretical basis for safe patient care. Discussion and collaborative activities through problem-based learning encourage inter and intrapersonal skills development and nurture the development of articulate graduates (Articulate). Problem based learning requires the learner to employ a variety of methods to problem solve and acquire knowledge (Agile and Curious).
