Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module provides students with the underpinning knowledge required to understand normal human anatomy and physiology and provides the foundations to explore the pathology of illness and effects of injury.

Syllabus:

This module examines the structures and functions of the human body organ systems. It describes the components of each of the systems and how these systems interrelate. It also describes the impact of illness and injury on these systems.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Use appropriate anatomical terminology in discussion of the human body.  Describe the following major body systems: Cardiovascular, Digestive, Musculoskeletal, Nervous, Respiratory, Integumentary and the special senses. Relate the maintenance of homeostasis to the interrelationship of body systems. Discuss the physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying a range of diseases. Evaluate the impact of injury to each of the body systems. Landmark anatomical structures and the component parts of each body system

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: N/A

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: N/A

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Students will participate in the learning environment by engaging in a variety of teaching and learning strategies e.g. lectures, discussions, group work, self-directed learning, recommended reading, reflection, challenge/problem based learning and practical demonstration. Discussion and collaborative activities through problem-based learning encourage inter and intrapersonal skills development and nurture the development of articulate graduates (Articulate). Problem based learning requires the learner to employ a variety of methods to problem solve, acquire knowledge and take an active role in their own learning (Agile and Curious).
