Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
Irish paramedics work to a published set of clinical practice guidelines (CPG's). These guidelines are regulator (PHECC) approved and evidence based. This module orientates the student to these guidelines and the skills and knowledge required to implement them in their practice. The clinical practice guidelines provide algorithms for the care management a variety of patient presentations, along with a medication formulary and skills matrix outlining the scope of practice of the Irish paramedic.
Syllabus:
This module orientates the student to the Clinical Practice Guidelines that will guide their practice as paramedics. The syllabus will consist of the underpinning theoretical knowledge and the practical skills required to implement safe and effective patient care in the prehospital environment.
Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Identify and use appropriate clinical practice guidelines to provide prehospital care.
Describe the care management of a variety of patient presentations
Outline the process of patient assessment
Communicate with patients and members of the multidisciplinary team.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Acknowledge professional attitudes and behaviours expected of a paramedic student.
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate the individual skills appropriate to the scope of practice of a student paramedic. (full list available in the PHECC skills matrix)
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
This module will primarily be taught through the medium of challenge/problem-based learning. Small group teaching encourages peer mentorship and guided self-directed learning (Curious).The students will participate in the learning environment through engagement in teaching and learning strategies e.g. lectures, discussions, group work, self-directed learning, recommended reading, reflection, peer presentations, and practical demonstration(Articulate, Courageous and Agile). There is an emphasis on student centered learning and an active and engaging learning experience.
