Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

Migration, the movement of people between places, is an intrinsically geographical process. Across the globe, the number of people moving is rising for increasingly diverse reasons. This includes the movement of highly skilled workers responding to the growth of our globalised economies as well as those displaced by political instability or climate change. This module considers the reasons for this growth in movement as well as the impacts on places of origin and places of destination. Understanding migrant lives also enhances our understanding of one of the key concepts of geography, place. As a result of their displacement, migrants experience a heightened awareness of the difference of place/s and therefore in studying migration it is possible to gain a better understanding of the significance of place to a sense of identity and belonging.

Syllabus:

The module builds on the ideas around migration introduced in GY4001, Introduction to Human Geography and GY4033, Population Dynamics. Through a range of Irish and international examples the module explores the drivers and impacts of migration. In addition, through an exploration of why people move, this module also aims to help students better understand how feelings of identity, belonging and connection to place are shaped by migration.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Describe patterns of migration at a range of scales. Recognise the impact of migration on places of origin and destination. Explain how the movement of people helps us better understand the meaning of place.
