Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the main non-written sources for local history, secondly to enable students to conduct independent research using such sources and finally, to identify the potential and possibilities of using such sources.

Syllabus:

locating the principal non-written sources û visual, film, video, oral history, folklore, material culture, the landscape; archaeology, maps, place names; identifying problems and possibilities associated with using sources; interpretation; using the non-written source

Learning Outcomes:

On successful complete of this module the historian of the locality will have the ability to: - demonstrate a clear knowledge of the key primary and secondary sources for researching and writing the history of localities; - explain the usefulness of these sources for the historian of the locality; - demonstrate an ability to identify and professionally gather these sources; - recognise the strengths and weaknesses of these sources; and - ascertain, evaluate and consider what conclusions can be drawn from these sources for answering a historical problem.
