Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

To explain the goals of historical research and to consider some of the central debates in contemporary historiography especially in their application to the study of local and regional history.

Syllabus:

The historiography of local history in France, England, Ireland, America; alternative approaches; the history of economies, ideas, language, mentalitÞs, politics, societies, urban and rural settings; total history and local history; components - birth, marriage, death, family, religion, natural and supernatural beliefs, property; sources and methodology; writing, interpreting, description, narrative, analysis.

On successful completion of this module students should be able to * consider the underlining concept of æpeople, time and placeÆ for researching and writing the history of localities * recognise the difference between scholarly and less authoritative local history narratives * demonstrate a clear knowledge of the key primary and secondary sources for researching and writing the history of localities * locate these sources in archives and other depositories * ascertain, evaluate and consider what conclusions can be drawn from these sources for answering a historical problem.
