Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
To develop communicative skills by revising and consolidating basic structures and vocabulary; to introduce autonomous language learning methods. Emphasis is placed on establishing a solid foundation in the language; by the end of Year 1, students are expected to use all basic grammatical structures with a high degree of fluency and correctness.
Syllabus:
Lecture: Japanese culture and society in the early 21st century. This lecture will be shared with the ab initio stream.
Tutorial work: Grammar: introduction to basic grammatical categories and terminology; consolidation of existing grammatical knowledge and expansion into more complex structures; Text analysis & production: principles of textual analysis and text discussion (literary and non-literary); grammar in use/communicative grammar.
Autonomous project work on aspects of Japanese culture and society using authentic materials.
Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: * identify and discuss in Japanese the main cultural and linguistic developments shaping Japan in the 21st century, * differentiate and explain in Japanese the functions of basic grammatical structures used within authentic written and audio-visual text * use grammatical structures and vocabulary revised throughout the semester with an appropriate level of correctness

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: * discuss in Japanese their own viewpoint on aspects of Japanese culture and society * structure and assess their own learning independent of the language classroom

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
The module will foster learner autonomy through discussion of learning strategies and resources available. The completion of an autonymously run-project on Japanese language or culture will foster proactive learners.
The further development of verbal and written skills in Japanese will foster the development of more articulate learneres.
Lectures on Japanese culture and society will foster greater intercultural awareness.
